Today, Senator Barack Obama spoke at a Call to Renewal conference regarding the need for Democrats to address Evangelical voters. As both an Evangelical Christian and committed Democrat, I have felt a bit chafed in recent months by some of those on the left. It doesn't change my views (either way), but many work to pit science against religion, and leave little room for religion, except for perhaps a highly compromised version, in modern life. Many would find a liberal political position compelling, but we wouldn't all get there the same way. It begins, for me, with viewing the government's primary responsibility as facilitating "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" for all its citizens. We're considerably less free when corporations/the free market are allowed to do as they may. They must be regulated and controlled--I'm not for anarchy. This whole thing was started around the time of the election. I was rather stirred up around that time--I remember asking my class who voted the day before (the response was not so promising). Some voted for Bush. I related how I was asked to cover up my shirt at the polling site, which said "Vote Dem." A student said he was also asked to cover his shirt, which said something more along the lines of "Fuck Bush." I don't know. I don't think anything's improved, per se. I like how John Kerry now seems a powerful voice in the government, more determined after he played nice for a year. Two soldiers were just killed, beheaded. But I read how Bill O'Reilly blames Air America. And about a week ago, Ann Coulter called 9/11 widows "witches." Rather than being incensed at this, I think people buy this version of "truth."
